AMC Exam Fees 2027: Complete Cost Breakdown for IMGs

If you are planning your AMC assessment for 2027, the fees are knowable today — and the news is better than most international medical graduates expect. The two largest charges in the standard pathway have both come down in recent years, not up.

This guide sets out every fee the Australian Medical Council currently charges, what has changed and when, what is not included in the AMC's own schedule, and what an honest 2027 budget looks like end to end.

A note on the year in the title. As at 18 August 2026, the AMC has not announced any fee change taking effect in 2027. Every figure below is the fee published on the AMC's Fees and charges page and is what a 2027 candidate should budget against today. If the AMC revises its schedule, it typically publishes the change in advance through its news and updates page — so confirm before you pay.

The AMC standard pathway fees at a glance

All AMC fees are in Australian dollars and are free of GST.

On top of any of these, the AMC applies a 0.96% bank surcharge to card transactions.

The two changes that matter, and when they happened

Most fee guides for the AMC are quietly out of date, because both headline fees were reduced.

The MCQ fee came down to $2,920, applying to applications received from 8 January 2024.

The clinical examination fee came down on 1 July 2025. The AMC announced on 30 June 2025 that in-person clinical exams sat on or after 1 July 2025 would be charged at $3,000, reduced from $3,991, and online clinical exams at $3,400, reduced from $4,391. That is a $991 reduction on the in-person exam.

If you are reading a cost breakdown that still quotes $3,991 or $4,391, it predates July 2025 and is wrong.

Why the online clinical exam costs $400 more

The $3,400 online clinical fee is not a different exam at a different price. It is the same $3,000 fee plus a $400 levy that has applied since 1 January 2023.

The AMC's stated reason is capacity: the online format assesses 18 candidates per day against 36 at the National Test Centre, and requires additional invigilators and coordinators. The levy does not apply to examinations sat at the National Test Centre.

The AMC states the levy "will be reviewed as changes are made to the online clinical examination format." There is no published end date. For a 2027 budget, assume it still applies unless the AMC announces otherwise.

The practical implication: if you can sit in person, you save $400. That is a real decision, not a formality — weigh it against travel and accommodation to the test centre, which may exceed $400.

What the AMC fee does not cover

This is where budgets go wrong. The AMC's schedule covers AMC assessments only. A realistic 2027 plan also carries:

• Primary source verification of your qualifications, charged by the verifying body, not the AMC
• English language testing — IELTS, OET, PTE Academic or TOEFL iBT, priced by the test provider and often sat more than once
• Ahpra registration fees, which are separate from the AMC entirely and are what you pay to actually register and practise
• Travel and accommodation for a clinical examination sat away from home
• Preparation resources, whatever you choose to use
• Re-sit fees, which are charged at the full examination rate — there is no reduced repeat rate

That last point is the one that most changes a budget: re-sits are charged at the full published rate, so every repeat attempt adds the whole exam fee again.

Refunds and withdrawals

The AMC publishes an Assessment Withdrawal and Refund Policy, linked from its Fees and charges page. Refunds are not automatic and are not a single flat rule.

We deliberately do not reproduce the refund percentages here: they are set by the AMC, they change, and a stale figure in a blog post is worse than no figure. If there is any chance you will need to withdraw or move a sitting, read that policy on the AMC site before you pay.

Budgeting the AMC year: a worked example

The AMC does not publish a "total pathway cost" — the figures below are simply the published fees added together, so you can check the arithmetic yourself. For an IMG on the standard pathway sitting the MCQ and then the in-person clinical examination in 2027, paying by card:

Choose the online clinical instead and the total rises by $400. Add a second qualification to your portfolio and add $107. Neither figure includes English testing, verification, Ahpra registration, travel or preparation.

What's changed — and what it means for you in 2027

No increase has been announced for 2027. What the AMC has actually published recently is two reductions:

• The CAT MCQ authorisation fee fell from $3,124 to $2,920, applying to applications received from 8 January 2024.
• The clinical examination fell from $3,991 to $3,000 in person, and $4,391 to $3,400 online, from 1 July 2025.

That is the published record, not a forecast. Fees can move in either direction and the AMC sets them, not us. What this means practically: budget the current figures, and check the AMC's news and updates page before you pay a large fee. Anyone quoting a confident 2027 figure that differs from the current published schedule is guessing.

The other thing that has changed is the size of the gap between passing and re-sitting. With the clinical at $3,000 rather than $3,991, a first-time pass saves less than it used to — but a re-sit still costs more than the MCQ.
